SIMUL8 and Scenario Generator

Scenario Generator was created to support strategic capacity planning. It is built using our core product, SIMUL8, and it comes with a ready-populated default model representing the whole of your health and social care system, but with the flexibility to enable you to change the model and its parameters.

It is not suitable for modelling all health and social care questions however, and our experience has shown us that users differentiate between "strategic" and "operational".

Strategic modelling is for those times when key high level questions need to be answered such as:

• What should our annual plan be?
• What will the impact of population growth or change in prevalence on health service demand
• What is the impact of significant system or pathway change
• What is the impact of specific change on the wider system

Scenario Generator is designed for questions such as these.

Operational modelling looks in more detail at weekly or daily processes and individual parts or services in a system and how this could be optimised. For example:

• Management of throughput at a clinic
• Operating theatre utilisation
• Planning for winter pressures
• Managing Emergency Departments
• Improving patient discharge
• Planning for resource requirements to meet daily, weekly variation in demand
